New Perspectives for Youth in Europe – Youth Encounter from 13\/09\/2014 \u2013 28\/09\/2014 in Magdeburg (1st <\/sup>week) and Sarajevo (2nd<\/sup> week)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Youth Education Committee (Serbia), The German War Graves Commission (Germany), the Institute for Youth Development KULT (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Sempre a Frente Foundation (Poland) are announcing the Call for Application for the joint Erasmus+ History Education Programme with two study visits to Germany, Mahteburg and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo from September 13 to September 28, 2014.<\/p>\n

In 2014 we are marking the 100th<\/sup> year of commemorating the World WAR I. Regarding the conflict situation worldwide and especially now in Eastern Europe, one can ask how much we actually learned from our past or if our history actually repeats itself. The question we ask is: is there any kind of common European history that can be called “ours” or do the multiple narratives on the WWI show the total opposite? In September 2014, we gather 24 young people age 18 to 26 from Germany, Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia to discuss this question. They will meet in Magdeburg, Germany to learn methods of remembrance culture and commemoration education, visit historical spots that mattered during the WWI and learn more about the reconciliation work of Poland and Germany during the last decades.<\/p>\n

After learning about methods like time witness interviews, discourse analysis, biographical work etc. the group will meet for a second time in the city of Sarajevo in order to commemorate the 100th<\/sup> anniversary of the WWI and to talk about its relations, similarities and contradictions to more recent conflicts like the Yugoslavian War or even the Crimea Crisis. With six days spent in each city, they will get to know one another and find out more about the history of WWI and it\u2019s meaning to the contemporary Europeans.<\/p>\n

During our meeting the participants will learn the history of our continent from historians and lecturers in Magdeburg and Sarajevo, discuss in groups causes and influence of the WWI on later events, visit historical places and employ their creative skills to present the knowledge which can be learnt from these events. Besides, they will pay great attention to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, visiting places of special importance to this country, comparing the war events to the events of WWI as well as reflecting on the role of the United Nations and the European Union in peace solving processes.<\/p>\n

Through workshops, discussions and meetings the participants will explore their national views on history and compare them with opinions of others in order to find the common European core. Spending the time together and taking part in the planned activities and cultural events, they will learn tolerance and understanding towards the views of others. Moreover, they will reflect on the essential characteristics of the European Union in connection with the exchange of ideas and experiences in the field of youth work, which will help them to plan and organise youth activities in their countries even better and with greater successes. Together we are creating the \u201c14\/14 Experience\u201d in which we not only reflect on different perspectives on our historical past, but discuss a perspective for a secure and peaceful future in Europe within the context of youth work.<\/p>\n
